In 1979 Appling founded the William Appling Singers  & Orchestra (WASO), a professional ensemble performing chamber works of all periods and styles. WASO released a number of critically acclaimed recordings including “Wake Ev’ry Breath,” a CD on New World Records of music by William Billings, “Stresses in the Peaceable Kingdom,” the choral music of Richard Wilson, “Shall We Gather,” a recording of American hymns and spirituals, and “The Revenge of Hamish,” choral music by William McClelland, all on Albany Records. In 1996, WASO was the only professional musical organization in the United States to present concerts celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of William Billings, America’s first great composer.

William Appling Singers & Orchestra premiered the works of many contemporary American composers, including those by Hale Smith, Richard Hundley, Donald Erb, Richard Wilson, William McClelland, and Rich Smith. The group also presented music by Charles Ives, Aaron Copland, Elliot Carter, Roger Reynolds, Richard Feliciano, Randall Thompson, Irving Fine, Janice Hamer, John McDonald, and many others. A composers’ forum, where works by Hale Smith and Anthony Davis were performed, was held at Vassar College in 1996 with both composers in attendance.

William Appling also enjoyed an active career as a pianist, appearing in solo recital at Town Hall, New York City, concerto performances with the Cleveland Orchestra under the batons of Robert Shaw and Louis Lane, at the Aspen Festival under Darius Milhaud, and in duo recital with tenor Seth McCoy. He was most recently working on a project of recording the complete works of Scott Joplin.

Appling was head of the music department at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, for twenty-five years. While there he founded and directed Summer Music Experience, an international six-week program offering intensive music training and performance experience to gifted students of high school age. The music camp/festival involved members of the Cleveland Orchestra and included visiting artists and master classes with Robert Shaw, Andre Watts, Yoel Levi, Janos Starker, Lynn Harrell and Lorin Maazel. Many former SME students enjoy successful careers as performers and composers and as teachers at major music institutions worldwide.
During his years as educator in the Cleveland area, Appling was Choral Director for Glenville High School, and under his leadership the choir became well-known throughout Ohio and beyond, accepting invitations to sing at the Hollywood Bowl, New York World’s Fair and at educators’ meetings in Ohio and Indianapolis. In 1965 the Cleveland Board of Education presented the Glenville High School Choral Club in a sold-out concert at Severance Hall. Appling also served as the Choral Director of the Case Men’s Glee Club, the West Shore Chorale, the Cleveland Philharmonic Chorus, and Director of Choral Activities at Vassar College.

Renowned conductor, pianist, arranger and educator, William Appling was a fixture in American classical music and music education for over fifty years. A graduate of Western Reserve University, BA and MA, he received numerous honors during his lifetime, including First Prize in Piano in the National Association of Negro Musicians and the first Kulas Foundation Fellowship Award for Choral Conducting given by the Cleveland Orchestra.

About the Lessons:

Tailored to each student, lessons are presented using the traditional method.

Students are encouraged to work and learn at their own pace.

Lessons include learning to read treble and bass clef, time signatures, types of rests, symbols and notes, counting, and practicing fingering, scales, pedals, strength, coordination and endurance building exercises, and musical pieces.  These private  classes also include performance technique, reading music, learning music composition theory while learning to play the piano.

All of this is seamlessly blended into each lesson in a comprehensive fashion with the goal of developing well-rounded and expressive musicians.

The range of music studied includes simple baroque classics (16th -18th century), modern holiday songs and hymns,  up through preludes, sonatinas and  sonatas.

My Students Are:

• Beginner,  intermediate and advanced (non-competitive) level students.
• Boys, girls, teens, and adults.
• Interested in Classical piano training and music.
• Want to learn how to read standard music and symbols, understand and use music terminology.
• Able and willing to practice at least 30 minutes to 1 hour each day.
• Responsible for purchasing books and materials as needed.
• Expected to be keep their instrument tuned, clean and in good condition.

Lessons are strictly business!

My standard contract for lessons contains these provisions:

• Students must have an acoustic piano or a touch sensitive digital piano with minimum 61 keys at home for practice and lessons.
• Students are responsible for tuition, books and materials.
• Teaching schedule is weekly.
• 3 Lessons are scheduled for each month/12 months per year.
• Tuition is for lesson time held for student, not a fee for services rendered.
• 24 hour notice is required for missed lessons.
• A missed lesson is a missed lesson. You pay for lessons scheduled, not for lessons attended.
• 4 weeks notice is required for a student cancellation of further lessons.
• Lessons paid in advance will not be refunded under any circumstance.
• I will allow 2 missed lessons with proper notice- after that the student will be charged for any missed lessons regardless of notice.
• Payment will be forfeited for student last minute cancellations.
• 24 hour cancellation policy if student is ill or payment will not be possible at time of lesson, otherwise payment will be due for missed class.
• Vacation, scheduling issues or changes require 2 weeks notice.
• Any lessons canceled by teacher (snowstorm, illness) will be made up at mutually convenient time.
• Makeup classes and extra lessons can be scheduled for weekdays when lessons are not otherwise scheduled any time throughout the contract year,not including Saturdays and Sundays.
• Contract requires payment at beginning of each month.
• Tuition is to be paid by check, money order or cash.
• No refunds.
• If check is dishonored cash will be the only accepted payment thereafter at the regular and non-discounted rate of $65/$45 per class.  $40 dishonored check fee will be due at next beginning of next class.
• Pets, siblings, TV, friends, etc.,  must not interfere with lesson.
• Students and teacher are allowed a 5 minute grace time for lateness.
• One student only per class, unless otherwise agreed in writing.
• Student lessons may not be video taped or recorded in any way.
• A parent may occasionally sit in on child’s lesson, though this is not recommended.
• Discounts available, please inquire by email for details.
• I reserve the right to drop any student immediately who does not abide by these policies.

Lessons are scheduled 3 per month.  Makeup classes and extra lessons can be scheduled for weekdays when lessons are not otherwise scheduled.

Rates:

• $65 for 1 hour lesson once a week at your home.
• $45 for 30 minute lesson once a week at your home.
• Rate includes my gas/mileage fee.
